THERE IS AN OFT-TOLD STORY ABOUT conductor Xian Zhang that recalls how her father—an instrument builder by trade—assembled her first piano from scratch when none other was available. That sense of ingenuity, rigor, and enthusiasm has carried through to her work as a jet-setting conductor with leadership posts at orchestras worldwide. Xian Zhang, the music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, is the first woman to lead the group in its 98-year history. Zhang first guest-conducted the Seattle Symphony in June 2008, [22] and returned as a guest conductor several times, including in 2020 and in 2021. [23] In September 2024, the Seattle Symphony announced the appointment of Zhang as its next music director, effective with the 2025-2026 season, with an initial contract of five years.
Xian Zhang will be the first woman and person of color to lead the Seattle Symphony, and one of only two women leading a top-tier American orchestra. Zhang recorded Frenesia, a work composed for The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra by their composer-in-residence Detlev Glanert. Also during that time, Xian became the Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales and conducted concerts all over Wales and at the famed BBC Proms. She conducted Beethoven Symphony No.9.
